The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, short story by Washington Irving, first published in The Sketch Book in 1819-20. Ichabod Crane is a Yankee schoolteacher who lives in Sleepy Hollow, New York, a Dutch enclave on the Hudson River. Crane believes the ghost stories and tales of witchcraft he has heard and read. He is particularly impressed by the tale of a spectral headless horseman said to haunt the area.

Rip Van Winkle is the story of an American Revolutionary War era Dutch-American villager who, while in the Catskill mountains, miraculously travels forward in time to discover that he is decades into a future that he doesn't recognize.
